in short
The ‘Miyake’ tea maker is the result from one of the assignments during the course ‘Design Visualization’ at TU Delft. This particular exercise focused on exploring and translating fast paced side sketches into a refined poster presentation using digital means. The aim was to understand and learn to apply the techniques of visual thinking, composition and material appearance.
ideation
The original sketch
We began the course with several loose sketches to explore different ideas without too many constraints. These were all quick and analogue sketches to keep things simple. Although I embrace the idea of quick and loose sketching I do prefer to analyse the different functional parts of a product and keep them in mind. The original exercise was to design a coffee maker, but during the ideation phase I came up with the idea of designing a tea maker to blend different types of tea.
Framework
Setting the theme
After the sketches I started thinking about the theme of the product. My design goal in terms of user experience was to create an ‘effortless tea moment’ for the morning routine. In doing so the product should allow the user to easily create their own tea blend in a soothing and relaxing way. Therefore I decided to visualize ‘serenity’ and ‘traditional’ in a moodboard to use as a reference.
Refinement
Putting everything together
The refinement process was all about applying knowledge from our in-depth studies of materials such a chromium, high-gloss surfaces and matte rubber. Applying this to the Miyake tea maker taught me how to integrate the techniques and improved my ability to quickly produce visuals that communicate a concept in a convincing and appealing way.
